About Nakia

Nakia, a celebrated queer artist in Austin’s music scene, has captivated audiences worldwide with his soulful voice for over 20 years. He’s shared stages with icons like Alejandro Escovedo, Sharon Jones, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, and even The Muppets.

Renowned for his community service, Nakia played a key role in creating emergency relief for Austin’s musicians and venues during the pandemic, earning the title of “Local Legend” from Matthew McConaughey.

Expanding his creative reach, Nakia has composed for film and TV and co-wrote the 15-song musical Dueling Pianos with Joshua R. Pangborn. As a three-time Recording Academy Texas Board Governor and founding President of Austin Texas Musicians, Nakia remains a powerful voice in the industry.

Recent projects highlight his versatility. In 2022, he released an EP featuring remixes of “Unstoppable” by Grammy-winner Dave Audé, and in 2023, his genre-blending single “Thrill-O-Matic” gained significant acclaim, becoming a top-played track on Austin’s Sun Radio.

His upcoming 80s synth-rock album showcases his evolution, with the lead single “Signal” set for spring 2024. Nakia has begun performing new songs live and is preparing for an Austin residency with his band.

Nakia resides in Austin with his husband of 22 years, Robert, and their dog, Baker, continuing to inspire through his music, leadership, and creativity.
